The weekend’s game against Bendigo in Mildura was a special one for Sydney Flames’ Sherrie Calleia.

It saw the NSW junior chalk up her 50th game in the WNBL.

And now the dust has settled on the milestone, Calleia has had time to reflect on her journey up to this point.

“50 games for me represents the sacrifices I’ve made and continue to make to play professional sport,” the Hills Hornets product said.

“It encompasses all the injuries, the wins; the losses, the challenges, the friendships and connections made, but most of all the resilience and perseverance as I continue to find ways to improve physically, mentally and emotionally.”

“[Since my debut] I’ve grown in confidence and trust within myself on and off the court.

“I know what and how I can bring my best self for the team playing or on the sidelines.

“True authenticity is not always easy, but I have learnt that being yourself far outweighs being right when it comes to working with the team.

“Everyone comes with their own limitations and strengths, so being able to come together to reach a common goal has a lot to do with understanding yourself and holding compassion for others to create deeper connections which then helps with chemistry and performance on the court.”

Flame #189 Calleia explained that the achievement felt even more special doing it with her hometown club and the one in which she debuted with back in 2018.

“It was really fitting that I was able to suit up with the Sydney Flames [for the milestone] from where my professional career started,” the guard said.

“If my younger self was told of the journey up until this point, I think she would be really proud of where I am today.”

Calleia and her Flames are now ramping up preparations for their key round 12 fixture with United in Geelong on Friday night.

“Our emphasis is on our defensive tenacity and generating energy from this into our offence,” she said.

“It’ll be a good matchup in front of the Geelong fans to solidify our position on the ladder.”

The fixture, tipping off at 7pm AEDT, will be broadcast live on 9Now.

Her harbour city side will then return home for the club’s third Pink Hoops double-header on Sunday, with tickets still available here.
