The exciting Harvey Norman Future Flames program may only have tipped off a few weeks ago but it’s already made a huge impact on the state’s next generation of basketballers.

After starting in June, with 25 up-and-coming NSW basketballers, head of Future Flames Renae Garlepp believes the opening few weeks of the inaugural program – run in conjunction with Basketball NSW – have been extremely positive.

“The first few weeks of Future Flames have been fantastic,” said Garlepp, who is also the Sydney Flames assistant coach.

“It’s been a truly enjoyable experience to bring together high-calibre basketball players from across the state.

“Watching these talented athletes compete against one another has been exciting.

“On the flip side, the response from the athletes has been very positive.

“From what I’ve observed, everyone is highly focused and putting in a great amount of effort.

“Their dedication and hard work are evident in every practice.”

The program, which runs from 9am – 12pm every Thursday at Hoops Capital East, is designed to help bridge the gap between the junior representative system and professional level, for the state’s elite talent.

“It’s been rewarding to teach the skills that the Flames practice daily during the WNBL season,” Flame #149 said.

“We’ve introduced new concepts that some players may not have encountered before, helping them grow both on the court.

“And over the coming weeks, we’ll continue to build on the skills and concepts we’ve already taught, as well as introduce some new ones.

“More importantly, we’ll focus on maintaining high energy levels and increasing the amount of scrimmage play to enhance their game experience.”

Looking down the road, Garlepp believes this program will only continue to grow and assist in the Flames of tomorrow in achieving their dreams of playing professionally.

“I see the program growing as athletes continue to adapt to new concepts and build stronger connections with each other,” she said.

“Over the coming weeks and months, the aim is to see enhanced skills, greater confidence, and improved outcomes as everyone becomes more comfortable with the program and integrates their learning.”
