Flames fixate on dousing Fire’s finals chances
With the Sydney Flames’ final chances all but over, the team is now set on disrupting their rivals’ hopes during the last five rounds of the WNBL23 season.
The first of those comes on Sunday when the Hoops Capital side host Townsville from 1.30pm AEDT.
“With Townsville, it will be crucial to execute on defence in ball screens and not allowing offensive rebounds – that’s where they really got us last time,” said Flames’ Hannah Sjerven.

The harbour city side, who are 4-11 this campaign, come into the Qudos Bank Arena fixture on the back of two home round 11 defeats to Southside and Perth.
“The last stretch of games has been good for us to find more rhythm with new line-ups on the floor,” the former Minnesota Lynx said.
“I’m proud of how our team competes on the defensive end and plays team basketball on the offensive end.”
As such, Sjerven’s side has been working hard to reverse their previous result against the Fire on January 15, while also aiming to wrap up their Hoops Capital double-headers on a high.
“In training, we’ve been working on playing at a fast pace but still playing with purpose,” she said.
“I’ve really enjoyed the double-headers, I think it brings in more fans in a bigger atmosphere.”
The Flames’ game against the Fire tips off at 1.30pm AEDT, with the Kings and Phoenix following at 4pm – with tickets still available here.
