Flames make changes going into exciting WNBL26 campaign

The Sydney Flames are excited to announce that Jenni Screen will once again be the team’s special advisor for the WNBL26 season.
The NSW-born Screen, who is a two-time Olympic Games medallist, joined the Hoops Capital club during the WNBL24 season and has provided assistance to Guy Molloy and his squad over the past two campaigns – which included reaching the post-season for the first time in seven seasons.
“Basketball is in my blood, I love this game,” said Screen, who won the 2006 World Championships gold medal with the Australian Opals in Brazil.
“I may not play the game anymore but being able to contribute in a small way to the women’s game and helping it to grow not only in Australia but my home state is important to me, it’s a privilege.”

Further to that, Screen is excited to continue to elevate the program in the coming years.
“When Luc Longley first contacted me over two years ago to assist in the Flames project, I did not even hesitate,” said Screen, who played 178 games during her WNBL career.
“I sensed the Denholms and fellow owners were truly invested in valuing, growing and supporting the women’s game.
“Everyone wants the ultimate we are no different – we will be doing all we can to make that a reality.
“I believe we are building something special in Sydney not just for the now but for the future.
“A destination that can showcase a link between the pathways to the pro league, respects homegrown talent and is a place you want to play your career at.
“Head coach Guy Molloy is meticulous for detail and a hard worker, who is known Australia-wide for his development of talent.
“My impact comes from assisting with recruiting, building the roster providing safe support for the players or just bringing a different perspective from time to time.
“WNBL26 will be building on last season and the lessons learned.
“We unearthed some talent, built some resilience through the adversity that was thrown our way due to injuries and made the finals – watch this space.”
Hoops Capital co-owner Victoria Denholm credited Screen for the impact she has made on the Flames and will continue to in the future.
“Jenni Screen has an incredible eye for talent and an understanding of what it takes to be a professional athlete,” Denholm said.
“She is our not-so-secret weapon working behind the scenes with our coaching staff and players to help them be the best versions of themselves.
“We are so incredibly lucky to have Jenni with her talent on and off the court supporting our club.
“I’m sure Flames fans are thrilled to know we have Screeni in our corner.”
The other major change for the harbour city-based club will see Flames president Denholm step down from her role (while remaining a Hoops Capital co-owner), to concentrate on the WNBL’s new era and her role as their director.
“I am incredibly proud of how far the Flames have come through adversity over the past three seasons,” said Denholm, who started as the Flames president during the WNBL23 season.
“Making the semi-finals this year for the first time in seven seasons was an incredible accomplishment and shows where this club is heading under the leadership of coach Guy Molloy.

“Working with the Flames has taught me so much and given me so much passion for where this league can go.
“I want to thank all of the incredible athletes, coaches and Flames staff that I have had the pleasure of working with over these past three seasons.
“I’m excited to continue working with the club and all the clubs to make the WNBL the best league in the world.”
