Garlepp excited to compete on world stage

May 20, 2025 | Sydney Flames news

Sydney Flames assistant coach Renae Garlepp is excited for the challenges that await her Australian Gems at the 2025 under 19s World Cup.

During the July 12-20 tournament in the Czech Republic, Garlepp’s green and gold side, headlined by Flame #228 Bonnie Deas, will take on Mali, Brazil and France in the group stage.

“The biggest focus has been preparing for what we’ll face, physicality, pressure, and relentless competition,” said Garlepp, who is also the program director of the Harvey Norman Future Flames.

“We’ve built that into every session and used it to guide selection.

“We looked for players who can handle the pressure, make smart decisions under pressure, and compete every possession.”

With the core of the successful 2024 Asian Cup side at her disposal, Garlepp is confident in her side.

“That [Asian Cup] core group has definitely helped with the transition; however, a lot changes in a year,” said Garlepp, who is also the coach of the NBL1 Norths Bears women’s side.

“The younger players came into camp and really performed.

“The exciting thing was how much they pushed the rest, which brought the best out of everyone.

“In the end, we backed the group that gave us the strongest mix of experience, hunger, and World Cup readiness.

“Everyone has a role to play and brings something unique to the group.

“We’re clear on the level we’re stepping into, and there’s no room to ease in.

“We need to arrive with purpose, compete with confidence, and stay connected under pressure.”

The Gems first play Mali on July 12 before fixtures with Brazil (July 13) and France (July 16).
