George’s Opals to battle Team USA in semi-final

August 9, 2024 | Sydney Flames news

Sydney’s Cayla George and her Australian Opals will face the USA in a do-or-die semi-final clash on Saturday morning, Australian time.

It was a dominant display from Sandy Brondello’s team in an 18-point victory over Serbia on Wednesday, while the USA team defeated Nigeria to book their place in the next round.

The Opals will need to defy history to make the gold medal game, with Team USA having not lost a single game at the Olympics since 1992.

But they’ll go in with plenty of confidence off the back of three straight wins, and a comprehensive display against the tenth world-ranked Serbians.

Australia last medalled in women’s basketball in 2012, with its best ever finish a silver medal, on three occasions.

The Opals – also featuring Flame #221 Tess Madgen – take on the USA on Saturday morning at 1.30am AEST, with live coverage available via the Nine Network and Stan Sport.
