Preview: Flames take on the Spirit in our Indigenous Round home game

The Brydens Sydney Uni Flames will take on the Bendigo Spirit in our Indigenous Round home game on Sunday, March 20 at 2pm at Brydens Stadium.

The Spirit will come up to Sydney for our last game of the season and Bendigo will be looking to steal the win after last week’s loss against the Flames.

The Spirit stated in their preview they have one goal in their mind, “payback”. But as the Flames have shown over this second-half stretch of the season, they will not go down without a fight.

The Flames beat the Spirit on their home court by five points with Keely Froling leading the team with 18 points and eight rebounds. The soon-to-be Opal will have to have a repeat performance to take down Bendigo.

Defensive star Kalani Purcell will also be instrumental, she held Spirit star Anneli Maley to 6/19 from the field in our last game. She flirted with a triple-double in our last game against the Lynx with seven points, nine rebounds and 10 assists, plus three steals.

Shyla Heal was held to a quiet game, only shooting 4/12 from the field but sunk clutch free-throws to win the game. She is playing on an injured ankle but has powered through the season.

One key for the Flames will be getting to the free-throw line,  only shooting 12 times from the charity stripe last time. Bendigo only got to the line nine times so the battle getting to the free-throw line will be on both Shane Heal and Tracy York’s mind.

But the x-factor will be our development players, Morgan Yaeger had a breakout game against the Lynx, scoring 18 points with four three-pointers. While Katie Deeble has filled the shoes of the injured Funda Nakkasoglu’s in the starting lineup. The young guns could be the swing piece we need to finish the season on a win.

The Flame will take on the Bendigo Spirit on Sunday, March 20 at 2pm at Brydens Staduim. If you haven’t got your tickets already, click here.
