JCU Townsville Fire guard Micaela Cocks will chase championship glory this week to commence the Winter Update. The 31-year-old, who will return for a seventh season with the Fire this summer, finished with 13 points, six assists and three rebounds at the weekend as Mackay defeated Logan 80-67 to book a berth in the Grand Final series. The Meteorettes will clash with the Brisbane Spartans on the road after they defeated Gladstone. Miela Goodchild was absent for the Thunder on international duties, while former Fire representatives Nadeen Payne (32 points and 18 rebounds) and Chevannah Paalvast (13 points and four assists) played key roles. In the SEABL Conference Final, Kelly Wilson and the Bendigo Lady Braves will face Launceston after they upset Dandenong. The Rangers had finished on top of the table but went out in straight sets after losing to Bendigo and Launceston. The winner will advance to the SEABL Grand Final against Kilsyth or Geelong. In the WNBA, Cayla George finished with three points and three rebounds in six minutes as Phoenix defeated Washington 89-79. The LA Sparks also took care of the Mystics, with Sydney Wiese collecting three boards in the 95-62 win. Finally, Australia will commence their campaign at the World Uni Games today with Darcee Garbin announced as a co-captain of the squad. The Emerging Opals face Lithuania tonight before further games against Argentina (August 22) and Russia (August 23).
