FIRE SIGN KIWI TALENT KRYSTAL LEGER WALKER

August 26, 2022 | Townsville Fire news

The JCU Townsville Fire are thrilled to announce their final roster spot: Krystal Leger-Walker from Waikato, New Zealand!

Krystal boasts an outstanding career from Northern Colorado and Washington State where her 139 starting appearances hold the record for most starts by a Kiwi in Women’s or Men’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball. A key part of the Tall Ferns Program – Krystal made her debut as a teenager and most recently added to her international career at the 2021 Asia Cup in Jordan last October.

Krystal on signing: “I am super pumped about playing for the Fire this season.  I have heard nothing but great things about Townsville and the club from my current Kāhu teammate – Micaela Cocks. She and a few others have given high praise to Coach Shannon, so I am thrilled to be under his guidance. I can’t wait to make a contribution to the club and community both on and off the court.  To say I am looking forward to this opportunity would be an understatement, playing in a world-renowned league with a high calibre team is exciting.”

Head Coach Shannon Seebohm is excited to finalise the roster with Krystal’s experience and defensive skills.

“I am very excited about the addition of Krystal to our team. Coming to the Fire after a successful career in the PAC12 at Washington State as well as stints as the starting point guard for the NZ national team, she has a lot of experience playing at a high level and has shown the composure and toughness that is required in order to help a team win games.  Krystal is a pass first guard with good court vision and loves to play defence, with the ability to guard both back court positions. I really enjoyed speaking with her during the recruiting process and believe she will be a great team person that our fans will love to watch play.”

Krystal is coming off a big season with Northern Kāhu in the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa and we can’t wait for her to join the team in Townsville.  Krystal finalises our roster, joining Tianna Hawkins, Karlie Samuelson, Lauren Nicholson, Stephanie Reid, Courtney Woods, Zitina Aokuso, Lara McSpadden, Morgan Yaeger and Mikaela Ruef, with development player announcements coming soon.  We’re looking forward to the upcoming 2022/23 season. Fire up Townsville!
